Our Projects

United Organic Coffee Growers Ltd is involved in various projects aimed at improving the livelihood of our farmers and community.

01.

Coffee

United Organic Coffee Growers Ltd produces certified high-quality organic Bugisu Arabica coffee. Our coffee is certified Fairtrade and Organic Management under NOP and EU standards.

Certifications: Our coffee is certified by multiple reputable organizations, ensuring the highest standards of quality and sustainability

02.

Bee Keeping

United Organic Coffee Growers Limited has integrated beekeeping as a vital component of our agricultural practices since our inception. The group initially focused on restoring bee populations that had significantly declined due to rudimentary honey harvesting methods, such as using DDT and burning beehives, which killed the bees and forced the survivors to migrate to safer habitats. To address this, we created a favorable environment for bee proliferation by adopting sustainable honey harvesting techniques, leading to the establishment of Buyobo Elgon Beekeepers.

Our beekeeping project has since evolved to enhance coffee farming, with the symbiotic relationship between bees and coffee plants significantly improving both coffee quality and yield. Challenges remain, including the need for additional beehives and honey extraction equipment, as well as ongoing capacity building for farmers. Our commitment to beekeeping extends beyond honey production to include products like beeswax candles, contributing to sustainable economic development and environmental conservation in our community.

03.

Vanilla Project

We initiated a vanilla project to diversify income sources and enhance the livelihoods of our farmers. By integrating vanilla cultivation with coffee farming, we aim to increase household incomes while promoting sustainable agriculture. Despite challenges such as the need for more vanilla vines and drying equipment, our farmers receive ongoing training to improve quality and yield. This project not only boosts economic stability but also supports environmentally friendly practices, making vanilla an important component of our community’s development and sustainability efforts.

Clean Energy

04.

Clean Energy

United Organic Coffee Growers Limited is committed to promoting sustainable development through our clean energy services. In 2019, we launched a project to provide energy-saving cook stoves aimed at reducing deforestation caused by increased demand for fuel from trees and forests, as well as lowering emissions and improving health for families around the Elgon Zone. These stoves have already benefited over 5,000 households, significantly curbing deforestation and protecting the environment. Our clean energy initiative not only enhances the well-being of our community but also supports our mission of sustainable agriculture by fostering a healthier and more eco-friendly living environment.

Future Projects

Produce Management

We aim to enhance our produce management capabilities to streamline operations and ensure the highest quality standards for our coffee and vanilla products. This project will focus on improving post-harvest handling techniques, storage facilities, and packaging processes to meet international market demands effectively. By investing in modern infrastructure and training programs, we aim to elevate our produce management practices to industry-leading standards.

Events Management

Our upcoming events management project seeks to build capacity in catering services, traditional entertainment groups, and event decorations. This initiative aims to host and participate in events that showcase our organic coffee and vanilla products, promote local culture, and attract potential buyers and partners. Through training and infrastructure development, we will enhance our capability to organize successful events that contribute to brand visibility and market expansion.

Microfinance for Coffee Farmers

We plan to introduce a microfinance initiative for our coffee farmers. This project aims to provide accessible financial services such as loans and savings programs to support agricultural inputs, infrastructure development, and income-generating activities. By empowering farmers with financial resources, we aim to improve productivity, sustainability, and resilience within our farming community while fostering economic growth and stability.
